Happy Veterans Day!
Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11th to honor the patriotism and service of American veterans. The history of Veterans Day is as follows:
- 1918: The armistice that ended World War I was signed on November 11th at 11 AM, the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”.
- 1919: President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first Armistice Day to honor those who fought in the war.
- 1926: Armistice Day was officially recognized in the United States by Congress.
- 1938: November 11th became a federal holiday in the United States.
- 1954: The 83rd Congress changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
- 1978: Veterans Day was moved back to its original celebration date of November 11th.
If November 11th falls on a Saturday or Sunday, federal government employees and some organizations observe the holiday on the preceding Friday or following Monday, respectively.
Remember that Veterans Day is a time to thank those who are serving or have served and are still with us.
